Prop Firm Fees Comparison
Every prop firm advertises one number: the entry fee. That number is often the smallest part of what you actually spend. Activation fees, monthly renewals, reset fees, market data and payout minimums all change the real cost — and they differ a lot from firm to firm. This page compares the fee structure of the major prop firms so you can work out the number that matters: total cost from sign-up to first payout.
This is educational content, not financial advice. Prop firm pricing changes constantly and firms run frequent promotions — the figures below are structural guides as of July 2026, and you must confirm the current price on each firm’s official website before paying.
How prop firm fees actually work
There is no single “fee” at a prop firm. There are up to five, and firms lean on different ones:
- Evaluation fee — what you pay to start. Either a one-time charge per attempt or a recurring monthly subscription.
- Activation fee — a one-time charge some firms add when you pass and convert to a funded account.
- Reset fee — the cost to restart a failed evaluation instead of buying a new one.
- Platform / data fees — CME market data or platform costs, most common with futures firms.
- Payout minimum — not a fee, but it decides when your money is actually yours.
A firm with a cheap headline fee but a stacked activation + data + high payout minimum can cost more than a “pricier” firm with none of those. Compare the whole stack.
Fee structure by firm (as of July 2026)
The table compares how each firm charges, using the popular $50K account tier as the reference. Exact dollar figures move with promotions — treat these as the structure, and confirm live pricing on each official site.
| Firm | Evaluation fee model | Activation fee | Reset fee | Data / platform | Payout minimum |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Topstep (futures) | Monthly subscription — around $49/mo on the $50K Standard path | $149 one-time (Standard); waived on higher-monthly No-Activation-Fee path | Via Reset Credits accrued on renewal | CME data included on funded path | Set per payout path |
| Apex (futures) | One-time fee per attempt, near-constant 50–90% promos | Separate one-time activation when funded (recently ~$85–$99) | Newer program: no eval resets — rebuy instead | Monthly platform/data pass-through | $500 minimum |
| MyFundedFutures (futures) | One-time / monthly eval fee by plan | $0 on every plan | Rebuy on breach | Data included on most plans | $100 minimum |
| Take Profit Trader (futures) | Monthly test fee (from ~$170 on $50K) | $130 one-time PRO activation, often waived by promo | Test reset ~$100; funded PRO reset far higher | Data included on Test | No fixed minimum above buffer |
| FTMO (forex/CFD) | One-time challenge fee per account size | None separate | Rebuy the challenge | N/A (forex, no CME data) | Set per payout cycle |
Where sources disagree on an exact figure (activation fees and promo pricing change often), we show a range or “around” rather than a precise number. Verify the live figure before paying.
Activation fee comparison, at a glance
Activation is where a cheap-looking evaluation can quietly become expensive. Ranked cheapest to priciest for a $50K account:
| Firm | Activation fee | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| MyFundedFutures | $0 | Structurally zero on every plan |
| Apex Trader Funding | ~$85–$99 | Newer 2026 program, one-time; often bundled in promos |
| Take Profit Trader | $130 (PRO) | Often waived by promo |
| Topstep | $149 (Standard) | $0 on the No-Activation-Fee path in exchange for a higher monthly |
| FTMO | — | No separate activation; challenge fee is refunded on first payout instead |
The two fee models, and who each suits
One-time fee firms (Apex, MyFundedFutures, FTMO)
You pay once per attempt. No clock runs against you, so you can take as long as you need to pass. If you fail, you either reset cheaply or rebuy. Best for traders who expect to need more than one attempt, or who trade slowly and don’t want a monthly meter running. Apex leans hardest into this with heavy promos; see the best futures prop firms breakdown.
Subscription firms (Topstep, Take Profit Trader)
You pay a monthly fee for the evaluation that keeps billing until you pass or cancel, then usually a one-time activation. Best for confident, fast traders — pass in month one and a $49 Topstep Combine plus $149 activation is genuinely cheap. Grind for three months and the meter overtakes a one-time-fee rival.
The break-even is simple: the faster you pass, the more a subscription wins; the more attempts you need, the more a one-time fee wins.
The fees people forget
- Activation fee — Topstep $149 (Standard), TPT $130, MFFU $0. Easy to miss because it hits after you pass.
- Market data / platform fees — futures firms may pass through CME data or platform costs monthly. Read prop firm hidden fees explained for the full list.
- Funded-account reset — resetting a blown funded account is far pricier than resetting an evaluation at most firms. Protecting the funded account matters more than passing the test.
- Refunds cut the other way — FTMO refunds the 2-Step challenge fee on your first payout, and FundedNext can refund up to 120%. A higher headline fee with a full refund can be cheaper than a “budget” firm once you pass.
How to calculate your real cost
Evaluation / subscription cost (× expected attempts or months)
+ Activation fee
+ Platform / data fees (× months to pass)
− Fee refund (if the firm offers one)
= Your true cost to first payout
Compare firms on that final number, never on the advertised entry fee.
